The world's greatest wildflower display -- up close with Drew
Every August and September, Namaqualand transforms into one of the most spectacular natural displays on earth -- millions of wildflowers covering the semi-arid landscape in a carpet of orange, yellow, purple and white.
The Namaqua Flower Tour is Drew Cloete's full-day celebration of this phenomenon. He guides small groups through the best flower routes in the region, combining plant knowledge with the cultural and ecological history of the Namaqualand landscape.
The day includes a scenic outdoor picnic in a flower field, Drew's personal stories about the relationship between the local communities and the wildflower seasons, and visits to spots that tourists in rental cars rarely find.
Drew can help coordinate accommodation options when you book. Availability changes by season, so early booking is recommended.
The flowers open with the morning sun, so we start early. Coffee and rusks at Klein Oqis while Drew gives an overview of the day's routes and what to expect.
Into the fields. Drew navigates to the first major bloom areas -- the route varies each year depending on rainfall and which areas are peaking. He explains the ecology as you walk.
Drew's secret spots -- places only locals know. Often far better than the famous roadside views. Walking through dense field of mixed wildflower species.
A prepared picnic lunch eaten in the middle of a flower field. Drew continues storytelling -- the folklore, the community memories, the Namaqualand women who have named species for generations.
The afternoon light gives the flowers a different quality -- photographers love this time. Drew takes the group to the afternoon colour routes for the final walk and photography session.
Return to Koingnaas. Tea/coffee and final questions. Drew recommends what else to see in the region before guests depart.
